- W2000584668 abstract "The reversal by cortisol of MSH-induced melanosome dispersion in frog skin melanophores was studied as a model of steroid antagonism of neuropeptide action on cells of neural origin. The effect of cortisol occurred without apparent lag period, was dose-dependent between 10−8 and 10−5M steroid and was rapidly reversible. Ongoing RNA or protein synthesis was not required. Steroid structure-activity relationships did not correlate with lipid solubility or affinity for known steroid hormone receptors. Cortisol reversed skin darkening caused by isoproterenol and by caffeine as well as by MSH. Epinephrine mimicked these effects of cortisol on frog skin but experiments with α- and β-adrenergic antagonists indicated that cortisol did not act indirectly via endogenous catecholamines. The data are consistent with our hypothesis that cortisol binds specifically to a novel type of receptor as yet uncharacterised on the melanophore and influences some step between adenylate cyclase and melanosome movement." @default.
