The susceptibility of 134 strains of Shigella isolated in University Laboratory at Butare (Rwanda) has been tested with Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol, Tetracyclines, Sulphonamides, Trimethoprim-Sulphamethoxazole, Gentamycin, Kanamycin, Nalidixic Acid and Nitrofurantoin by Kirby-Bauer method. The results have shown that no one strain was resistant to Gentamycin, Kanamycin and Nitrofurantoin, when 10,5 % of isolated Shigella were resistant to Nalidixic Acid, 33.6 % to Trimethoprim-Sulphamethoxazole, 40.3 % to Ampicillin, 48.5 % to Chloramphenicol, 86.6 % to Tetracyclines and 27.3 % to Sulphonamides. In view of the obtained results with Nitrofurantoin, we think that it is imperious to do more serious clinical investigations to admit it in the treatment of Shigellosis." @default.
