- W2000595837 abstract "Many types of fimbriae have been described on pathogenic Escherichia coli strains. K88, K99, C F A / I and C F A / I I are fimbrial antigens on enterotoxigenic E. coli strains. The K88 antigens are found on strains causing diarrhoea in piglets [1], whereas strains with the K99 antigen cause diarrhoea in calves and lambs [2]. C F A / I and C F A / I I are colonization-factor antigens on E. coli strains that cause diarrhoea in man [4,5]. These fimbriae are encoded by plasmid genes and mediate the adherence of the enteropathogenic strains to the intestinal epithelium of their hosts [6]. P-fimbriae are found on human uropathogenic E. coli strains [7]. They probably facilitate an ascending infection of the urinary tract by binding the bacteria to the P-blood-group-specific glycosphingolipids on uroepithelial cells [8-10]. The P-fimbrial preparations from two pyelonephritogenic E. coli strains consist of several separate fimbriae which could be separated by immune precipitation [11]. Here, we give an immunoand protein-chemical characterization of these fimbriae." @default.
