- W2000597767 abstract "To The Editors: In an otherwise excellent review of hematopoietic growth factors and interferon, Lau et al.1 in the July issue of the Journal provided incorrect information regarding the risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection after blood transfusion by stating that 5% of transfusions may involve exposure to HCV. This statement might have been correct when referring to adults undergoing open heart surgery in 1985 because their cumulative risk of HCV from the multiple red blood cell and platelet products might have been as high as 5%. However, with the implementation and refinement of screening blood donors for HCV during the past few years, the risk has declined dramatically. For the past 3 or 4 years the usual figure that has been quoted for the risk of acquiring HCV infection through transfusion of a single unit of blood or blood product is ∼1 in 3000.2 Encouraging data published recently suggest that the current HCV risk per unit of blood may be as low as 1 in 103 000.3 Therefore Lau et al., in alluding to data referring to data more than a decade old, have greatly overestimated the real risk of HCV infection after blood transfusions. It is critical that pediatricians reading the review article by Lau et al. be aware of this oversight. They and others should rest assured that the risk of virus transmission by blood products is extremely low at present. Although all blood transfusions must be given with caution only when indicated, our nation's blood supply is currently safer than ever before. George R. Buchanan, M.D. G.
