- W2000614535 abstract "In eight goats the injection of an emulsion of normal sheep brain with adjuvants did not produce an encephalitis. In sheep, the same brain emulsions as used for the goats produced a characteristic neurological syndrome in 4 out of 8 adult animals and in 6 out of 9 lambs. Noteworthy clinical features included the long latent periods elapsing between injection and the onset of symptoms, the acute course in some animals, possible recovery in a few “negative animals”, and a relapsing disease in at least one positive case. The lesions of ovine allergic encephalitis have some similarity to those seen in other species but acute haemorrhagic changes were not encountered. Areas of myelin rarefaction were, occasionally found but selective perivascular, punched-out or diffuse foci of myelinoclasis were not observed—such as is seen in experimental allergic encephalitis in monkeys and in the natural variety of simian Schilders-like disease. (For review on the latter see Scherer (1944) and King and Meehan (1950).) The disease does not resemble any type of naturally occurring encephalitis so far identified in a ruminant. Sheep might be used with advantage in future attempts to produce an artificial counterpart of human disseminated sclerosis." @default.
