- W2000614623 abstract "SEVERAL ATTEMPTS to use objective temperament tests to predict col lege achievement have reported encouraging results. Although Klugh (5) was unsuccessful in developing an empirical scoring key for the Guilford Zimmer man Temperament Survey that would predict scholastic Quality Point Average (QPA), Bendig and SpraguV(3) found that several of the standard GZTS scales were related to student achievement in introductory psychology. Gough (4) de veloped a short temperament test, the Hr scale, that successfully predicted grades in psychology courses and his results were independently confirmed by Bendig (1). Bendig and Klugh (2) found that the Hr scale was also valid in pre dicting student QPA and that a linear combination of this scale with the ACE test was a more valid predictor of QPA than was the ACE test alone (6). Inter est in the relation of Taylor's Manifest Anxiety Scale (8) to scholastic aptitude and achievement has also been marked. Although MAS scores are unrelated to general QPA (2, 6, 7) and achievement in introductory psychology (1), this temperament scale apparently shows a weak negative relationship to ACE test scores (6, 7) and a stronger negative correlation with the Gough Hr scale (1,2, 6). Klugh and Bendig (6) have shown that the MAS acts as a weak suppressor variable for the achievement-irrelevant variance in the Hr and ACE tests. The present research was designed to test the hypothesis of Bendig (1) that a validity item analysis of the Hr and MAS items would permit the construction" @default.
