- W2000643458 abstract "In their recent article, Hartemink and McBratney (2008) provide ample evidence that, at present, “there is increasing attention for both soils and soil research”. They attempt to respond to “pessimisim, particularly in North America, on the future of soil science”, expressed by Baveye et al. (2006) and Hopmans (2007). Invoking the customary “droit de reponse”, we would like to explain here that, from our perspective, Hartemink and McBratney (2008) seem to have largely missed the point of the debate that Baveye et al. (2006) and, we believe, Hopmans (2007) as well, attempted to foster. This fundamental misinterpretation led Hartemink and McBratney (2008) to construe our position as pessimism, when in fact our keymessagewas an urgent (but hopeful) call to action. The debate is not at all about whether the research on soils is or is not attracting significant attention at present. By and large, that is a moot point! Three years ago, we referred to the research on soils and soil-related issues as “thriving” (Baveye et al., 2006, p. 509). Anyone looking at figure 6 of Baveye et al. (2006, p. 508), illustrating among other things the amazing rate of increase of the number of publications dealing with soils since the late eighties, would be forced to reach the same conclusion. And the trend has continued unabated since 2005, when the figure was compiled. In the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters) database, there are 19,153 entries in 2007 with the words “soil” or “soils” in the title, keywords or abstract (but not the wild card “soil*”, which would include lots of articles on soiled fabric). The Scopus database (Elsevier) has 25,762 corresponding entries for the same year. This latter number represents a mind-boggling 274% increase, relative to 1987, in the number of articles indexed annually by Scopus, and, for the soil researchers who need to keep abreast of the literature, an amazing lot of articles to absorb!!. Of course, to get an accurate picture, one would have to compare this increase with that of the scientific literature overall during the same period. That comparison is not straightforward, given the fact" @default.
