- W2000675055 abstract "Abstract Hand hygiene is still considered the simplest and paramount measure to prevent nosocomial infections. These infections complicate between 6 and 14 percent of admissions in pediatric institutions. The objective of hand hygiene, either by regular handwashing with soap and water or by using an alcohol-based handrub, is to decrease hand colonization with transient flora and, in turn, reduce the risk of transmission of potentially dangerous pathogens. The use of an alcohol-based handrub seems to be more effective because it requires less time, is faster in action, and is more accessible. Compliance with hand hygiene procedures has been a problem for more than 150 years, and rates of approximately 50 percent in many hospitals have been reported. Many strategies to improve compliance with hand hygiene are reviewed, and future issues in hand hygiene are discussed. Copyright © 2001 by W.B. Saunders Company" @default.
