- W2000696001 abstract "The induced level of β-galactosidase directed by an F lac+ episome derived by reversion from F lac zs− is about twice the amount of enzyme synthesized under the control of the same z+ gene on the chromosome, suggesting that there are two functional copies of the F lac+ episome per nucleus. Soon after the introduction of lac+ genes of Escherichia coli into lac+ bacteria by F lac+ transfer, the rate of β-galactosidase synthesis is directly proportional to the mass increase of the culture. Lac+ cells usually increase as a constant fraction of the recipient population. Certain exceptions reflect peculiar properties of the recipient strains. The differential rate of enzyme synthesis in the rnerozygotes corresponds closely to the specific activity of β-galactosidase in F lac+ heterogenotes, an indication that soon after F-duction the F lac+ episome achieves the status it has in an established F lac+ strain, without undergoing extensive replication. There is no significant level of β-galactosidase synthesis in i+z−/F i−z+ merozygotes in the absence of inducer." @default.
