- W2000697329 abstract "Electrical properties of small internal splits created in high vacuum in Ge and Si, have been studied as a function of exposure to oxygen and air. The recontact of the surfaces of the split is sufficiently close to exclude gas entry over a region which is proportionately larger, the smaller the split. X-ray examination by the Lang technique of splits created in Si in air reveals that the observable contrast can disappear in the base region of the split on recontact. Since the contrast due to disturbances like dislocations is readily observable, this evidence shows that the recontact takes place to high perfection. The accumulated evidence from electrical, gas and x-ray studies is interpreted to show that the splitting technique used permits surface recontact that is sufficiently good in the base region of the split, for lattice restoration to be possible. The apparent occurrence of this shows that the clean surface structure involves only minor disturbances, such as small vertical atom displacements, from the ideal structure, for cleaved and annealed surfaces." @default.
