- W2000701522 abstract "In her autobiographical note for books and TV appearances Gail Braybon – who was born in 1951, grew up in Southampton, and for five years studied at Sussex University – described herself as an independent historian. This was an apt description. She was independent intellectually and institutionally from much academic history; this gave her a shrewd vantage-point from which to craft her own histories and to monitor the growth of a field in which her own work had been foundational. Her first major study, which came out of her Sussex MPhil, was entitled Women Workers in the First World War (1981), announcing a theme – the relations between women and war in twentieth-century Britain – which dominated her histories for the rest of her life. In this first book she used a wide array of sources to question the idea that the war improved the conditions for working women, demonstrating that women were not generously treated, nor did their gains from war work endure. She wrote forcefully about the neglect of women’s experience and the centrality of their war work to the winning of the war." @default.
