- W2000717081 abstract "Coral is clinically used and reported as being a biocompatible bone graft substitute, but there have been few histological reports. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether osteoclasts resorb coral in vitro. Rabbit bone marrow derived osteoclast-like cells were cultured on coral slices for 24 to 48 hr. Tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAPase) positive cells were identified as osteoclast-like cells, and were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The osteoclast-like cells formed resorption lacunae on the coral. Numerous filopodia projected from the brim-like structure at the base of each cell and wrapped around the coral crystals, as also did the microvilli on the cell surface. This observation suggested the these filopodia and microvilli might be responsible for resorption of the coral, and indicate that osteoclast-like cells that resorb coral possess different morphological characteristics from the osteoclast-like cells that resorb dentine, and that coral is definitely resorbed by osteoclast-like cells." @default.
