- W2000720902 abstract "The primary aim of this investigation was to determine whether normotensives at increased risk for hypertension report attenuated perceptions of quadriceps muscle pain intensity during a maximal cycle ergometry test. Black normotensive women (n = 14) with at least one parent with physician diagnosed hypertension (+PH) were compared to a group of 15 Black normotensive women whose parents had not been diagnosed with hypertension (−PH). The (mean ± SD) age (19 ± 1 vs. 19 ± 1 yrs.), height (65 ± 2 vs. 65 ± 2 in.), weight (141 ± 36 vs. 148 ± 39 lbs.), BMI (23.1 ± 5.0 vs. 24.2 ± 5.3) and 7-day recall of physical activity (37 ± 2 vs. 39 ± 3 kcal·kg·d−1) of the +PH group did not differ from the -PH group. Quadriceps muscle pain intensity (0–10 scale), heart rate and oxygen consumption were assessed during a ramped, maximal cycle ergometry test. The +PH group was found to not differ significantly from the -PH group on peak power output (189 ± 23 vs. 204 ± 24 watts), peak heart rate (176 ± 9 vs. 179 ± 12 b·min−1), VO2peak (29 ± 5 vs. 30 ± 6 ml·kg−1·min−1), and peak quadriceps pain intensity (6 ± 3 vs. 6 ± 3). A Group (+PH vs. -PH) X Submaximal Intensity (i.e., 50%, 70%, & 90% of peak power output) ANOVA on pain (F = 4.51; df = 2,54; ± 2 = .143; p = .015) yielded a significant interaction which showed that the +PH group reported higher pain ratings at 50% and lower pain ratings at 90% of peak power output compared to the -PH group. The results show that a parental history of hypertension influences quadriceps muscle pain intensity ratings during submaximal exercise." @default.
