• W2000727307 abstract "Abstract We investigated the kinetics and mode of aggregation of two classes of polystyrene latex particles using a particle counting technique (Coulter Counter). The latex particle characterised by a high surface density of hydrophilic hydroxyl, carboxylic acid and sulfate groups (one group nm −2 ) was found to present characteristics of hydrated colloids whereas the latex particle bearing only carboxylic acid groups at a lower density displayed characteristics of lyophobic colloids. The latter colloids were found to aggregate in agreement with the kinetic model of Smoluchowski and the self-similarity concept. The fragmentation of these aggregates was obtained by strongly increasing the surface density of the carboxylate groups and the range of electrical repulsive forces between the stuck particles. The self-similarity concept of the aggregate mass frequency was found not to apply to aggregation of the hydrated latex particles and three aggregate populations, whose average masses increase with time, were found to be formed during aggregation. The fragmentation was induced by slowly decreasing the ionic strength of the dispersing medium, a procedure which was expected only to increase the range of hydration forces without increasing the surface charge density. Finally, the same suspending medium (0.3–0.5 M NaCl at pH 3) was found to destabilise the lyophobic colloid whereas it induced peptisation (redispersion) of previously formed aggregates of the hydrated colloid." @default.
