- W2000741907 abstract "The in vitro antibacterial susceptibility to aztreonam was assessed among a total of 3,743 clinical isolates obtained from nine hospitals in Saudi Arabia from 1987 to 1989. Using standardized disk susceptibility testing, the activity of aztreonam and gentamicin was determined. All gram-negative organisms showed a high activity to aztreonam; the percentage susceptibility of Enterobacteriaceae ranged from 87% to 100%, with the exception of Acintobacter, which showed a susceptibility of 62%. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 94% were inhibited by aztreonam. All multiresistant Serratia marcescens tested were susceptible to aztreonam. The activity of aztreonam against selected organisms was determined by the broth dilution method (minimal inhibitory concentration, MIC) and compared with that of cefotaxime, moxalactam, ceftazidime, ticarcillin, and gentamicin. The activity of aztreonam against Enterobacteriaceae was similar to that of cefotaxime but greater than that of moxalactam and gentamicin. The inhibitory activity of aztreonam against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae was comparable to ceftazidime and better than that of aminoglycosides. The minimal bactericidal concentrations of aztreonam was equal to or twice the MIC of most strains tested. The selective spectrum of action of aztreonam makes it a useful agent in the therapy of a variety of gram-negative infections." @default.
