- W2000747735 abstract "Overtone and combination bands assignable to amide group vibrational modes in the near-i.r. spectra of γ-butyrolactam, δ-valerolactam, and ϵ-caprolactam have been elucidated. Establishment of the frequencies of the relevant fundamental i.r. amide group absorptions of the cis lactams in CHCl3 and CCl4 solution has permitted assignment of a 2νNH overtone mode and of (νNH+amide II), (νNH+amide III) and (2νCO+amide III) combination modes to absorption bands in the 7000-4550 cm−1 region of the near-i.r. In addition, a (νNH+νCO) combination mode is established for a prominent band near 5100 cm−1 not observed in the spectra of trans open-chain secondary amides. The five assignments were corroborated with the aid of deuteration, methylation, and solvent shift studies and account for all of the amide group absorptions observed in this region of the near-i.r. spectra of the lactams. A comparison of the mechanical anharmonicity constants for the NH stretching vibration of the cis lactams with those for trans-configured secondary amides demonstrates that the magnitude of this constant is not affected by a change in the configuration of the amide group." @default.
