Methods 16 patients with a history of dust allergy symptoms, positive skin prick tests with Dp extract and significant bronchoconstrictive response to inhaled histamine (PC20 Results Twenty-four hours after allergen exposure in 9 out of 16 patients concentration of the exhaled NO significantly increased from 88 ppb to 134 ppb (p=0.0015) and a significant decrease in expression of CD163 on peripheral blood monocytes was found (from 1.97 IU to 1.82 IU; p=0.006), while in the remaining 7 patients there was no change in exhaled NO (145 ppb before and 135 ppb 24 hours after allergen challenge; p>0.05) but a significant increase in CD163 expression was noted (from 2.09 IU to 2.39 IU; p=0.0015). Conclusions Asthmatic responses to allergen challenge are associated with significant changes in the expression of CD163 on peripheral blood monocytes, with airway inflammation as determined by increased expired NO being associated with downregulation of CD163." @default.
