- W2000788790 abstract "Abstract The nearest neighbor environments about constituent atoms in a wide variety of amorphous solids have been examined and may be classified in terms of three parameters: A—the angle sustained at a given atom by a pair of nearest neighbors, B—the bond length between a given atom and its nearest neighbors and C—the coordination number of a given atom. It is found that the well defined short-range order characteristic of crystalline solids is preserved in simple oxide glasses where very strong bonds are formed. Deviations in bond angle from a single value appear to be a general structural characteristic in the nearest neighbor environment of all other amorphous solids which include elemental and compound semiconductors, glassy salts and metallic glasses. The metallic glasses, however, seem to be unique in that each of the A, B and C parameters for the close-packed metal constituent has a distribution of values. Strictly speaking, in the metallic glasses there is not a single basic structural unit (such as the SiO 4 tetrahedron in vitreous SiO 2 ) but a distribution of local configurations which exists in the dense random structure." @default.
