- W2000793228 abstract "THE investigation of sources, analogues, and allusions has always been one of most important areas of Shakespearian studies. Interesting new perspectives for comparative research, however, have emerged since the 1980s with the introduction of the concept of intertextuality. As Keir Elam points out in his afterword to this volume, looking for semiotic links with Shakespeare's plays rather than for ‘one-to-one relationships with privileged sources’ (254), is clearly fit for the Elizabethan era, in which the concepts of inventio and imitatio played such an important role in literary production. Certainly, exploring the wider context of Italian Renaissance ideology is useful so that the debate about to what extent Shakespeare knew Italian is taken with a grain of salt. Such a debate, while philologically pertinent, sometimes makes critics blind to ideas which were common to all contemporary Europe – and, as Jason Lawrence notes in his essay on Shakespeare's dramatizations of Cinthio, has probably the disadvantage of creating ‘a Janus-headed Shakespeare…so clever that he could write the dramas, and so stupid he could not learn a foreign language’ (91–2)." @default.
