- W2000821032 abstract "Abstract 1. 1. A haemagglutination activity was identified in egg jellies of urodeles (Amphibia caudata). 2. 2. The localization of this activity in the oviduct, which secretes the jelly, was different depending on the species. Two groups of urodeles could be distinguished in which haemagglutinin was located in the anterior segment of the oviduct or the most posterior segment. 3. 3. Lectins were identified by saccharide inhibition assays in four species: Pleurodeles waltl, Ambystoma mexicanum, Hynobius nebulosus and Notophthalmus viridescens. 4. 4. In N. viridescens, the lectin activity was inhibited by heparin whereas in the three other species the activity was inhibited by d -glucose and derivatives. 5. 5. P. waltl and A. mexicanum lectins were purified by affinity chromatography on epichlorhydrin cross-linked starch. 6. 6. Each of the purified lectins forms a major band on SDS gels with molecular weights of 26,000 (P. waltl) and 18,000 (A. mexicanum). 7. 7. The optimal pH of the lectin activity was 7.5 in P. waltl and 7.0 in A. mexicanum. The haemagglutination activity of both lectins required Ca2+ and was maximal between 30° and 40°C. 8. 8. The possible functions of these lectins are discussed." @default.
