- W2000827382 abstract "Abstract Forty male and 80 female, 18-day-old broiler chicks were fasted for 18 hr, individually housed, and offered a lipogenic diet for 78 hr. Following a further 18-hr fast, the chicks were slaughtered and their carcasses were analyzed for dry matter, fat, nitrogen, and ash. Twenty-five male and 29 female chicks were slaughtered after the initial 18-hr fast to provide data for predicting the initial carcass compositions of the experimental birds and to estimate changes associated with the experimental treatments. The treatments consisted of a basal diet diluted with 10 levels of cellulose such that the basal diet intake spanned the requirement for body maintenance. Intakes of feed dry matter, energy, bioavailable energy, and nitrogen were recorded for individual birds. Retained energy (RE) as fat (REf) and protein (REp) and the input of energy (IE) were considered in total and on the basis of body weightkg.75/day; a prime sign denotes the latter transformation (e.g., FE′). There were linear relationships of IE′ with RE′, RE′p, and RE′f. The estimated net energy requirement for maintenance ranged from .443 to .513 MJ/body weightkg.75/day according to the estimate of bioavailable energy. (There are 4.184 Joules/calorie.) The correlations between RE′, RE′p and RE′f were positive (P" @default.
