- W2000875559 abstract "Thepresent workwasprompted bytheinadequacyofanyonesimple laboratory test toserve as aclinical guide tothyroid function. Tests involvingtheuseof'3'I (MasonandOliver, 1949;Foote and Maclagan, 1951; Foote,Mackenzie, and Maclagan, 1952) areapplicable onlytountreated casesofthyroid disorder. Plasmaprotein-bound iodineestimations (deMowbrayandTickner, 1952;Fraser, 1954)areunlikely topassinto routine useowingtoinherent technical difficulties. Oxygenconsumption measurements (basal metabolic rate),though relatively non-specific, usually provide themethodofreference, ifnotofchoice, forthevarious tests advocated fromtime totime. We aimedatasetoftests oftheconventional typesuitable fortheroutine measurement ofthyroid function bothasadiagnostic tooland asa guidetosubsequent treatment. Forthis reason we evaluated theresults offive measurementsandchosetwoofthese, theserumcholesterol level andtheurinary pigment excretion, as being themostuseful. We thenevolved twoways inwhichtoassess thyroid function fromthese two data:correlation withtheobserved basal metabolic rate(02-B.M.R.) gaveadiscriminating function thesolution ofwhichwehavecalled the derived B.M.R.;comparison withthefinal diagnoses ofthesamepatients gaveaqualitative chemical diagnosis. Thechoice between these twoformsofexpression isoneofindividual preference, andwe areatpresent using bothforms inacomparative studyofradio-iodine andconventional tests. Theresults wepresent hereare themselves a continuation of theseries first reported byTarnoky (1952)." @default.
