- W2000896790 abstract "Abstract A new method was developed for characterizing polymer matrix controlled release systems, based on the measurement of through-transmission of ultrasound. This method was used to study the release of a model protein (bovine serum albumin) from ethylene-co-vinyl acetate polymer matrices, at temperatures of 4°, 22° and 37°C. In addition to ultrasound attenuation, protein release and weight change of the matrices were evaluated in vitro. During release, the matrix undergoes a transition from complete attenuation of normally incident ultrasound to considerable transmission of sound energy through the device. The occurrence of this transition is interpreted as the complete dissolution of the protein phase and formation of a continuous fluid-filled network. This interpretation is based on the fact that the observed decrease of attenuation occurs when the weight of the devices is at a maximum. Increased temperature shifts both the transition in ultrasound attenuation and maximum in weight to shorter times, consistent with the effect of temperature on the release rate. A mechanistic interpretation of the observed results is discussed." @default.
