- W2000901305 abstract "Bacterial sepsis and meningitis remain important causes of mortality and morbidity in the neonate, particularly in those born prematurely. Clinical signs are often non-specific and, although culture of blood or cerebrospinal fluid remain ‘the gold standard’ diagnostic techniques, there is increasing interest in non-cultural methods. High risk groups are infants of mothers with pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia or premature rupture of the membranes and neonates receiving prolonged intensive care who are prone to nosocomial infections. Appropriate sterile techniques, hand washing and avoidance of cross-infection are the most effective prophylactic strategies. Antibiotic treatment must be guided by knowledge of local pathogens. Enhancement of host defences by, for example, exchange transfusion with fresh blood or administration of hyperimmune immunoglobulin appear effective adjunctive therapies.
