- W2000965093 abstract "In the preface of Biology and Pathology of the Oocyte: Role in Fertility and Reproductive Medicine, the editors (Drs. Alan Trounson and Roger Gosden) effectively argue that “unique” is an overused and empty adjective to describe the rarest of cells, the oocyte. In much the same way, the adjective “comprehensive” fails to describe this enjoyable and highly readable collection of review articles. In discussing the extraordinary history of the oocyte to cutting–edge technologies, the editors have assembled a veritable Who's Who in Reproductive Biology, covering a range of topics from oocyte anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, and pathology to current and potential research and fertility-dependent aspects of this cell. This well indexed and referenced book is divided into five sections. The first section is a fascinating, and biologically and socially relevant, discussion of the “magic and mystery” of the oocyte, authored by Dr. Roger Short. Section II, Life Cycle, examines the oocyte from fetal origin of the ovary, through the follicular cycle, fertilization, and menopause. Discussions are presented at both anatomical and molecular levels, and also include interactions between oocytes and surrounding granulosa and thecal cells, as well as follicle dynamics at all stages. Finally this section includes a subsection on comparative oogenesis. The third section, Developmental Biology, provides a wealth of information on oocyte gene expression and protein handling. Also covered are subsections on oocyte molecular development, meiosis, and its endocrine and checkpoint control, egg activation, and developmental competence in relation to early embryogenesis. Particularly intriguing chapters in this section are those of Dr. Laura Hewitson and coauthors, who discuss intracellular differences in eggs fertilized naturally and those fertilized after ICSI, and that of Dr. Jonathan Van Blerkom, who discusses polarity and symmetry as possible predictors of embryonic developmental competence. Section IV, Pathology, builds on the previous section, and deals with how oocyte intracellular building blocks contribute to reproductive/oocyte failure. Of note in this section are Dr. Ursula Eichenlaub-Ritter's chapter dealing with aneuploidy of oocytes due to aging and toxic insult, and Dr. Eric Shoubridge's discussion of mitochondrial DNA. The final and perhaps most exciting section, Technology and Clinical Medicine, covers topics such as follicle and oocyte-granulosa cell culture, cryopreservation of oocytes and ovarian sections, and oocyte in vitro maturation. It is refreshing that authors such as Drs. Alan Trounson, Jillian Shaw, Shae-Lee Cox and John Eppig were not trapped into presenting just the positive aspects of these technologies, but also discussed pitfalls, potential dangers, and the need for long-term safety evaluation of new technologies. Biology and Pathology of the Oocyte: Role in Fertility and Reproductive Medicine is not only, as previously stated, an enjoyable read; the multi-species and broad-based approach encompasses the remarkable biology of the oocyte. Furthermore, the information included provides a strong foundation in the field of oocyte biology, and the inclusion of timely subjects, such as use of assisted reproductive technologies and their potential long-term implications, make this book an essential reference for anyone interested in animal or human reproduction. To bring so many subjects together in an organized manner is a daunting task, but the editors have definitely succeeded. Moreover, throughout this book, the text is complemented by clear, and often striking, charts, diagrams, and photographs. This book is highly recommended and a valuable asset for practicing clinicians to basic scientists, as well as for students, to those well established in the field of reproduction." @default.
