- W2000969922 abstract "The present study proposes that children's apparent comprehension of certain words is at first dependent on a combination of their linguistic hypotheses about a word's meaning and certain non-linguistic strategies. Children aged 1;6-5;0 were given instructions requiring comprehension of the locative terms in, on and under. The results showed that children go through three stages: At first, they consistently use certain non-linguistic strategies that can be characterized by two ordered rules; next, they apply these rules to only one or two of the locative instructions; and finally, they exhibit full semantic knowledge of the three word meanings. Because of these non-linguistic strategies, the younger children always appear to understand in correctly, sometimes appear to understand on and never understand under. It is argued, nevertheless, that these non-linguistic strategies determine the order of acquisition of the three locative terms. Cet article a pour but de démontrer que dans un premier temps la compréhension apparente de certains mots chez les enfants dépend autant d'hypothéses linguistiques qu'ils font sur le sens d'un mot que de certaines stratégies d'ordre non-linguistique. Dans l'expérience décrite par l'auteur des enfants âges de 18 mois à 5 ans ont reçu des directives concernant la compréhension des mots ‘dans’, ‘sur’ et ‘sous’. Les résultats de cette expérience ont démontré que la compréhension chez les enfants passe par trois étapes consécutives. D'abord ils utilisent certaines stratégies non-linguistiques caractérisées par deux séries de règles bien déterminées; dans un deuxième temps ils appliquent ces règles à une ou deux seulement des instructions locatives données et finalement ils démontrent une connaissance sémantique totale de la signification des trois mots en question. Grâce à leurs stratégies non-linguistiques, les enfants plus jeunes paraissent comprendre toujours ‘dans’ correctement, ne comprennent ‘sur’ que dans certains cas, et ne comprennent jamais le mot ‘sous’.
