- W2000977906 abstract "Book Reviews 177 Los sefardies en los dominios holandeses de America del Sur y del Caribe, 1630-1750, by Gunter BOhm. Frankfurt a.M.: Vervuert Verlag, 1992. 223 pp. This little book is a welcome contribution to the surprisingly sparse solid historical research on Sephardic history. In a sense, it is a groundbreaking book, since it is the first attempt to deal with that history in the Dutch possessions ofLatin America and the Caribbean. Whereas the author is to be congratulated on this attempt and on the presentation of this material to the Spanish-reading public, the book has some problems with omission of important material and too hasty, and therefore inadequate, treatment of regions most in need of fresh treatment. Nevertheless, the section on Brazil, which constitutes over half of the book, is of interest and contains some new information. Having chosen to begin his history with the formation of the Dutch West India Company in 1621, the author nevertheless mentions a few instances of earlier Sephardic Jews and their trade connections with Brazil. Even more could have been added, and in fact it must be said that 1600 is the date with which the study should have begun. Had the author consulted, e.g., Hermann Kellenbenz, As relafoes econ6micas entre 0 Brasil e a Alemania na epoca colonial (Recife, 1961), as he did his better-known work Sephardim an der unteren Elbe, he would have found further information. For the same reason of limitation in dating, he has ignored Joseph da Costa of Amsterdam, who from 1617 was already trading with Brazil, where he finally went and became parnas of the Zur Israel congregation in Recife. He then was one of the Sephardim who went from Recife to New Amsterdam (later New York), which is ignored. Indeed, even the famous departure of the Recife community to become the first Jews in North America is mentioned by the author only briefly. The role of the Sephardic merchants in the sugar trade, while briefly mentioned, is hardly discussed, with the result that the importance of this role cannot be gauged from reading this book (in Barbados, not discussed in the book except in passing, the sugar mill was invented by a Sephardic Jew). What is particularly important, and properly emphasized by the author, is the intolerance of the Dutch settlers and authorities towards the Dutch Sephardic community in Brazil (p. 22ff., and particularly pp. 29,35). Popular myth notwithstanding, even in Amsterdam the Dutch were not always the paragon of toleration with respect to the Jews which they are 178 SHOFAR Fall 1996 Vol. 15, No. 1 often thought to have been. We recall, too, that when the Recife Jews arrived in Dutch New Amsterdam they were promptly thrown in jail. However, what is lacking, among other things, is any discussion of the role of the Portuguese (Spanish) Inquisition as it related to Jews in Brazil and the Caribbean. Several pages (102-108) are devoted to the martyr Isaac de Castro (Tartas), to be sure, although without noting that he was the brother of the famous Amsterdam printer David, and without any mention of Miguel Daniel de Barrios' work dealing with the Inquisition and its persecution ofIsaac and other martyrs (nor the secondary literature on this). There is a considerable literature on the New World Inquisition . In addition to Brazil, in fact, there is a short section on Nova Zeelandia, which is not New Zealand, of course, but rather Guayana (pp. 109-25). This is of some interest, for less is known about the Jewish settlement there than elsewhere. Nevertheless, as with most of the book, information is drawn entirely from secondary sources, and further investigation of original sources is necessary. The Sephardic community of Surinam, of course, was of considerable importance. Not surprisingly, the author devotes more space to this than to the other communities (Guayana, Cayenne, Tobago; the long chapter on Curac,;ao in fact deals mostly with the eighteenth century). Once again, however, all ofthe information is derived from secondary sources, with the exception of a 1788 book by David Nassy, which the author says is not particularly reliable (p. 135) but which he nevertheless cites repeatedly..." @default.
