- W2000981572 abstract "The lectins concanavalin A, leucoagglutinin from Phaseolus vulgaris, and Ricinus communis agglutinin I induce a sequence of ultrastructural events which are associated with the release reaction: formation of surface protrusions and deep infoldings, granule discharge, expression of granule content through surface-connected channels which continue with infoldings, and appearance of a contractile gel in the platelet center. The degree to which the changes in ultrastructure advance depends on the kind of lectin and its concentration. With concanavalin A, 50 μg/ml, complete granule discharge is accomplished within 2 min. The platelets either retain a highly folded outline or approach a smooth sphere contour. The latter phenomenon is accompanied by incomplete expression of amorphous material remaining in vacuolar structures. The two forms observed in the late stage of the release represent various responses of platelets to a change in plasma membrane/volume ratio. The membrane-associated particles remain randomly distributed. The results are consistent with the view that the release reaction is mediated by a centripetal contraction within the platelets." @default.
