- W2000981772 abstract "One method of investigating the mechanism or mechanisms by which X-rays produce their effects in biological systems has been to study the postirradiation effects or after-effects of X-irradiation and their modification by various environmental factors. This approach has been employed in the present investigation. The influence of different levels of oxygen concentration on certain biological effects of X-irradiation has been determined in resting barley seeds during a prolonged (8-week) postirradiation period. Initial results of this study have been reported earlier (1). Tascher (2) was the first to demonstrate a postirradiation effect in resting seeds. He stored X-irradiated barley seeds for 12 weeks at room temperature and found that the germination percentage decreased with increased storage time. In later experiments (3) it was shown that the percentage of radiation-induced mutations was not altered by storingfor2 weeks at temperatures ranging from 5? to 38? C. Gustafsson (4), on the other hand, found an increase in rate of induced mutations when X-irradiated seeds of certain Brassica species were stored for one year. Storage of X-irradiated barley seeds has also been found to decrease viability (3) and growth (5) and to increase chromosomal aberrations (6). The relationship between oxygen and radiosensitivity has been the subject of a" @default.
