- W2000983675 abstract "Abstract Azospirillum brasilense cultures were characterized using microcalorimetry. Microcalorimetric output is a power-time curve; the area under the curve measures the heat production of the culture. The relationships between the heat production and the other characteristics of Azospirillum brasilense growth on a synthetic malic acid medium were investigated. Pearsons' correlation coefficients between heat production, bacterial counts, cell dry weight, malic acid consumption and cell protein concentration were highly significant. Introduction into soil of inocula from the early-exponential or exponential growth phases (i.e. sampled “at the slope” of the microcalorimetric power-time curve and when the power output of the culture reached its maximum) resulted in a higher stabilization level and a lower death rate than when early-stationary-stage or stationary-phase inocula (sampled after maximum power output) were used. When inoculated into sterilized soil extracts, bacteria of the early-exponential and exponential growth stages started to multiply earlier (shorter lag time) and at a higher rate than bacteria from the later growth stages. We conclude that the variation that we are confronted with in inoculation trials is to some extent due to physiological differences among inocula and may be reduced through timely sampling." @default.
