Pb 1) exposed to 3 levels (10, 20, and 40 mM) of sodium chloride (NaCl) for a period of 3 weeks were investigated. A method of relative nutrient addition rate was adopted to simulate sparse nutrient supply from soils with low fertility. Parallel to the basal nutrient regime plants were subjected to nutrient regimes with high K+ or Ca2+. After one week of exposure to 40 mM NaCl the growth reduction of the plants was up to 33%. Plants treated with 10 or 20 mM NaCl contained relatively low Na+ concentrations and there were no consistent effects on growth. Presence of Na+ at all applied levels decreased the uptake of K+and Ca2+. Forty mM Na+ enhanced the uptake of phosphate. A high external K+ (1 mM) level did not improve growth and depressed the Ca2+ concentrations to critical levels especially in roots. Supplementation of Ca2+ (5 mM) neither reduced growth inhibition by Na+ nor diminished the internal Na+ concentration, but the level of K+ in the roots became lower. The sensitivity of sesame to Na+ salinity is linked to limited restriction of Na+ transport into the shoot, and interference of Na+ with K+, Ca2+ and phosphate uptake and distribution." @default.
