- W2001124485 abstract "Abstract Over a significant range of altitude in the topside ionosphere the drift velocity of O 2+ ions is controlled by the motion of the dominant O + ions because the diffusion coefficient is too small to permit the doubly-charged ions to diffuse relative to the ambient plasma. Since it is not very likely that chemical recombination of O 2+ ions is important at these heights the O 2+ density is determined simply by the rate of photoionization of O 2+ ions and by the ambipolar diffusion velocity of the O 2+ ions. It is therefore possible to calculate O 2+ densities in the topside ionosphere without knowledge of the chemical loss rates, provided that these are not very large. Illustrative calculations show that the O 2+ density increases slowly with altitude and that the ratio of O 2+ to O + is about 1 per cent at 500 km." @default.
