- W2001230004 abstract "A survey was conducted to investigate women's perception of, and satisfaction with, the obstetric ultrasound service at the Rosie, in Cambridge. Part of the survey included an assessment of women's knowledge regarding the reasons for their scans. The aim was to identify any lack of knowledge women might have in order that recommendations could be formulated to ensure that women are fully informed prior to attending for a scan. Thirteen standards were produced which encompassed the women's entire scan experience. Standard one stated that 100% of women are fully aware of the reasons for their scans. In order to assess whether these standards were being met, women attending for a scan between 28.06.2007 and 20.07.2007 were asked to complete a semi-structured questionnaire. All the questions within this questionnaire had received ethical approval, and it was the women's choice whether to complete a questionnaire or not. Question one asked the women to select statements that related to the reasons for their scan. The questionnaires were completed by 430 women. Of this sample, 147 (34%) had a dating scan, and 175 (41%) a detailed anomaly scan. Only 88% of the women were aware that the dating scan is used to measure the crown-rump length (CRL) in order to calculate the estimated date of delivery (EDD). Only 63% were aware that the main purpose of the detailed anomaly scan is to identify any structural abnormalities such as heart defects or spina bifida. The results highlighted an apparent lack of knowledge some women have regarding the reasons for their scans. The scan is a screening test and not simply an opportunity to visualise the baby, discover the sex and obtain a printed image. Any lack of information may cause some women to be unprepared for the possibility that a fetal abnormality may be detected. Therefore, all women having scans during pregnancy should be informed of the main reasons for their scans." @default.
