- W2001323984 abstract "Purpose: Pediatric otolaryngology is an exciting and evolving field. It continues to be refined as we gather more information on head and neck embryology, morphogenesis, growth, and development. Advances in science, such as miniaturization and mapping of the human genome, have allowed the development of safer and more refined surgical and medical management of children. Methods: We performed a detailed literature search of the history of pediatric otolaryngology, enabling us to provide a discussion of how the evolution of disease and population demographics have changed this subspecialty. We emphasize the need for both multidisciplinary management of complex pediatric conditions and database research to facilitate informed discussions with careers, guardians, health providers, insurance companies, government managers, and other stakeholders. Results: We compare differences in craniofacial morphogenesis and physiology between adults and children, following this with a discussion of genetics, the biopsychosocial model of illness, and the pediatric model of care. A series of case scenarios illustrate the survivorship and ethics of managing children and their families with otolaryngologic issues. Conclusion: Pediatric otolaryngology requires better definition of its subcategories. This is achieved in appropriate institutions and at collegiate meetings with experienced professionals, fostering direct comparisons of their experience. It is important not to alienate the general otolaryngologist who rightly continues to manage children and to fully support their ongoing care as previously rare and complex conditions become more prevalent." @default.
