- W2001454795 abstract "The formation of iron atom charge states both more and less positive than the charge state of the cobalt atom in the parent compound have been observed in 57Fe Mössbauer experiments on inorganic solids. While the persistence of more positive charge states can be rationalized as a consequence of an internal conversion—Auger cascade process, the mechanism for the formation of less positive charge states has so far not been clearly understood. Recent experiments by Drickamer et al. on inorganic 57Fe Mössbauer absorbers have shown that ferric compounds under pressure give isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings normally associated with ferrous complexes. This phenomenon may be able to account for the observation of the “anomalously” low charge states of 57Fe formed from 57Co in an ionic cobaltic ion lattice, since the well known ionic radius difference between the two transition metal ions can manifest itself as an “internal pressure” at the metal ion lattice site. This working hypothesis is examined in some detail in the light of existing information pertaining to the compressibilities and charge states of iron compounds and to the nature of the nuclear precursor event in 119Sn Mössbauer experiments." @default.
