ALLEN is assistant professor of musicology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he also serves on the faculty committee for the Environ mental Studies Program. He earned a BS in environmental studies and a BA in music from Tulane University in New Orleans, followed by a PhD in music from Harvard University with a dissertation on the reception of Beethoven in nineteenth century Italy. Allen is cofounder and currently chair of the Ecocriticism Study Group of the American Musicological Society. He is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome for 2011–12.
