- W2001784936 abstract "The nucleoid of fowlpox virus (FP) exhibits in cross-sectional profile a flowerlike structure (the “Blumchen”) 250 A in diameter, along with 5–7 “small elements” 130 A in diameter. These nucleoid elements are randomly arranged within a DNA-containing matrix, and possess an axis 50 A in diameter, also containing DNA. By means of serial sectioning and tilting, the nucleoid elements can be shown to be tubular. They are believed to form a continuous, folded structure, which provides a backbone for the 100 μ m-long FP genome. In longitudinal profile, the Blumchen portion of the nucleoid is between 700 and 1400 A in length. It is characterized by uniformly arranged subunits about 50 × 60 A (the “petals”), which are believed to form a helix around the central tubule. Cross sections of the Blumchen regularly exhibit 7 petals in its circumference and show occasionally a subdivision of the central tubule into 12 radial subunits spaced about 35 A center-to-center. Examination of early forms of the virus reveals nucleoids composed of alternating light and dark striations having a center-to-center spacing of about 50 A, and a longitudinal, beaded periodicity with a center-to-center spacing of approximately 35 A. Also characteristic of early forms containing nucleoids is an invagination of the outer membrane." @default.
