- W2001789937 abstract "The fluid dynamic processes which occur when dense hot saline fluid flows along the sea floor into a local depression (reservoir) are examined in this paper. After some time, the reservoir fills with salty fluid which then flows out of the reservoir over a sill. A sharp double-diffusive fluid interface develops at the level of the sill forming a ‘cap’ to the reservoir and the new source fluid flows horizontally just below this interface, continually losing heat (and a little salt) to the seawater above. A steady-state balance is eventually achieved where the total fluxes of heat and salt which are lost across the double-diffusive interface are equal to the corresponding advective fluxes due to the source fluid being warmer and more saline than the fluid which spills over the weir. The horizontally moving gravity current of new source fluid entrains some reservoir fluid from below and this entrainment is shown to have a very weak influence on the steady-state values of the reservoir temperature and salinity. This fluid model is applied to the formation of massive sulphide deposits in submarine depressions on the sea floor. McDougall (1984, Deep-Sea Research, 31, 145–170) has considered the case where the source is located below the height of the weir and in this paper we assume that the hot saline source is located above this level." @default.
