- W2001877013 abstract "Conflict of interest: none declared. Xerosis is a common health problem that can be triggered by both exogenous and endogenous factors. Lower environmental humidity, cold weather, overuse of cleansers, and bathing without applying emollients are common exogenous factors.1, 2 The endogenous risk factors include renal failure, nutritional deficiency, thyroid disease, neurological disorders, malignancy, radiation, antiandrogen medications, diuretic treatment, Sjögren’s syndrome, atopy and diabetes.1–4 To our knowledge, the relationship between coronary heart disease (CHD) and xerosis has not been studied previously. We investigated the prevalence of xerosis in patients with CHD. The local ethics committee approved the study and the participants gave oral consent. The patient group was drawn from those attending an internal medicine ward in Peking University Third Hospital during the period December 2006 to February 2007. Other patients in the same ward during the same period served as controls. Patients with haematological diseases and malignancy were excluded because they were treated in another ward. All participants were of Chinese Han ethnicity. To decrease the possible bias caused by the difference in age and gender between the two groups, one‐to‐one age‐matched (± 2 years) and gender‐matched patients and controls were also selected, based on the sequence of admission." @default.
