- W2002040295 abstract "Hays (1965) reported successful tranquilization of the house fly, Musca domestica L., and a reduction in reproductive potential in the female house fly when fed diet containing reserpine5 (methylreserpate 3, 4, 5-trimethoxybenzoic acid ester). Wicht and Hays (1967) and Hays and Amerson (1967) reported a reduction in oviposition in female house flies fed reserpine, though the eggs were found to develop normally within the ovary. Reserpine has several uses in medicine, including treatment of schizophrenic patients (Gallager et al. 1957) and hypotensive actions (Goodman and Gilman 1956). Among many mechanisms by which reserpine may act, one is by the release of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) and other serotoninlike substances such as melatonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan, and 5-methoxytryptamine from tissue storage sites (Brodie et al. 1966). It is possible that the reduction in oviposition resulting from reserpine administration might be caused by the effect of released serotonin or similar substances. Serotonin has been identified in certain insects and other arthropods (Colhoun 1963). The present study was conducted to determine if serotoninlike substances are released by reserpine in the house fly and to correlate this release with the effect of reserpine on oviposition in the female house fly." @default.
