Abstract The mean space motion and Fe/H abundances of metal-rich RR Lyrae stars are examined, and it is suggested that such stars descend from old disk-population giants. The probability that an old disk giant will evolve into an RR Lyrae star is shown to be 1/200 of that for its halo-population counterpart. Observational data are discussed which indicate that field metal-rich RR Lyrae stars exhibit a strong preference for small or nonexistent period changes, that the lifetimes of such stars on the instability strip probably exceed 20 million years, and that the low rate of RR Lyrae production from old disk giants cannot be attributed to unusually rapid evolution through the instability strip. The evolution of metal-rich zero-age horizontal-branch (ZAHB) stars is calculated. The results suggest that metal-rich RR Lyrae stars can evolve from old disk giants only if the latter lose about 0.5 solar mass and are limited to a very small range of masses.
