Stable Carbenium Ions, XIX. - Investigation on the Substituent Effects of Chlorine and Fluorine in Diarylcarbenium Ions Bis(4-halopheny1)carbenium hexachloroantimonates, halo(dipheny1)carbenium hexachloro- and hexafluoro-antimonates% well as bis(4-fluorophenyl)halocarbenium hexachloro- and hexafluoro-antimonates have been prepared and characterized. The acceptor strengths of the different carbenium ions were determined by halide transfer experiments. The charge delocalization on chloro and fluoro substituents was ascertained by 19F-NMR experiments with appropriately substituted fluoro derivatives. It could be shown that in the case where the substituent effect is transmitted by a phenyl ring fluorine stabilizes the carbenium ions better than chlorine whereas in the case of halogen attached directly to the positive center chlorine stabilizes more than fluorine. Fluorine stabilizes better than hydrogen. The total substituent effect is given by the sum of -Iρ-, +Iπ- und +E-effects." @default.
