- W2002085008 abstract "In our Case Report (May 24, 2003)1Schattner A Zimhony O Avidor B Giladi M Asking the right question.Lancet. 2003; 361: 1786Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (15) Google Scholar of a patient with endocarditis, we identified the causative agent as Bartonella henselae, based on history of cat contact, serology, and PCR-restriction length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the aortic valve. We have since reinvestigated this case because of the expanding number of Bartonella spp emerging as human pathogens; results of PCR-RFLP analysis of two additional genes and DNA sequencing indicate that the true causative agent was B koehlerae.2Avidor B Graidy M Efrat G et al.Bartonella koehlerae, a new cat-associated agent of culture-negative human endocarditis.J Clin Microbiol. 2004; 42: 3462-3468Crossref PubMed Scopus (143) Google Scholar Since B henselae was previously the only cat-associated Bartonella spp pathogenic to humans and since both of these species are serologically cross-reactive, other cases of B koehlerae endocarditis might have been misidentified as B henselae infections. There is a tendency when diagnosing infectious diseases to assume the obvious. We hope that our experience acts as a warning to keep an open mind to unexpected pathogenic agents, particularly in the specialty of zoonotic infections where new species are constantly emerging.
