- W2002092912 abstract "Thirty-five of 186 recipients of renal transplants in a twenty-one month period were Australia antigen positive at the time of transplantation. The Au antigen positive group was compared with an Au antigen negative control group of recipients matched for source of kidney, age, sex, and date of transplantation. The follow-up period averaged twenty-one months post transplantation. Among twenty Au antigen positive recipients of related kidneys, there were eight rejection episodes but only two kidney losses and one death. Among twenty matched related Au antigen negative controls there were thirteen rejection episodes, no kidney losses, and two deaths. Of fifteen Au antigen positive cadaver recipients there were eighteen rejection episodes, eight kidney losses, and six deaths. Of the fifteen matched Au antigen negative recipients of cadaver kidneys, there were four rejection episodes, one kidney loss, and four deaths. In only one of the Au antigen positive recipients did clinically significant liver abnormalities develop one year after removal of the transplant, which eventually led to death from hepatitis. Au antigenemia in recipients does not seem to be associated with increased risk except perhaps in recipients of cadaver donor kidneys in whom the apparent increased risk may be coincidental.
