- W2002104595 abstract "Reviews WilliamD. Paden,Jr.,Tilde Sankovitch, and Patricia H. Stäblein, eds. ThePoemsofthe TroubadourBertrándeBorn. Berkeley, Los Angeles, and London: University of California Press, 1986. Pp. xxii + 573. AsoneofthelordsofAngevinFrance andasone ofthemost powerful and distinctive poetic voices in medieval literature, Bertrán de Born commands our attention. Actively involvedwith numerous major contemporary political and literary figures, a man of action, Bertran's personal response to the real world furnishedthesource ofhispoetry; throughitheprovides usinturn withthe means to enterthatworld. Yet, aswith anyauthentic link to another time and place, a successful passage demands careful attention to a daunting array ofdetails. Now for the first time we are provided in this splendid edition with the means to confront those details, toread andappreciate Bertran'spoetry, to enterhis world. In their introduction the editors first place Bertrán de Born inhis historical and culturalsetting. Theybeginwith adescription of the dynamism of the society of the time and the particular knightly ethic of the poet's class, factors that help to explain his idealism andvigor. They next place Bertrán in his family setting, detailing what is known of his name, connection with Autafort, grandfather, father, and then his own life and posterity. All of these details are thoroughly documented in extensive footnotes and illustrated with several maps. The editors then address Bertran's art. They note his role in the establishment of the sirventes, the genre with which Bertrán is firmly and primarily associated , stresshis centralposition in thebroader troubadour tradition , and demonstrate his powerful influence on subsequent European poetry, an influence thatwaneswith the appearance of Petrarchonlyto emergeonceagaininthe 19th and20thcenturies. As is the casewith a numberoftroubadours, ourmanuscript sourcesarenot infull agreementastothe attributionofindividual poems to Bertrán de Born. The editors discuss this problem as it bears on each of the disputed poems, present the arguments for andagainstattributionto Bertrán, andthengive theirown conclusions . The result is a collection of forty-seven poems that are eithercertainlyorprobablyhiswork. These arethenpresentedin chronological order and in groups organized around a recognizablydominanttheme , e.g. VI. The ThirdCrusade: 1188-94. This Reviews15 principle of organization is in keeping with the editors' intent, which is to make Bertran's poems accessible, because the reader is always informed with respect to the manner in which a given poem relates to the poet's life, to the broader historical background , and to other poems. Inestablishingthetextsoftheindividualpoemsthatmakeup this edition, the editors have been guided by their decision to provideoneauthenticreadingofBertran'spoetryfromamongthe manythattheextantmanuscriptspreserve. Theyhave, therefore, remainedasfaithful aspossibletoacarefullyselectedbasemanuscript in the case ofeach poem, the base having been chosen for thequalityofitsreading,i.e.thenumberofemendationsrequired, and for its rapportwith the edition as awhole, i.e. the number of manuscripts required. Emendations have been made only to correct a reading of the base thatviolates the demands ofmeter, rhyme, lexicon, syntax, sense, or history. Emendations have indeed been kept to a minimum, and, when required, they have been made on the authority of a clearly identifiedvariant manuscript . The editors have carried out their stated policy with admirableconsistencyandinsuchawaythatthecriticalapparatus is kept to a minimum. The result is an edition that centers appropriately on the literary-historical as opposed to the textual problems. Each poem is introduced by a headnote, which gives its generalhistoricalsetting, andbyaseriesoftechnicalnotestreating its meter, melody (ifavailable), razo (ifextant), previous editions and commentary, manuscripts and base, order of stanzas (when required), and emendations. The text is then presented, accompanied by its translation on the facing page to the left and by explanatorynotes in the marginto the rightso thatthe readerhas at a glance all the aid necessary to a successful reading. While faithfulto the original, the translations are not literal, ratherthey are into idiomatic modern English and so communicate immediatelythe sense and spiritofBertran's Occitan. The notesprovide information on persons and places or interpretive analyses of potentially troublesome passages. The result is again an edition that centers, even in its format, on the reading ofthe poem. The book is closed by a series ofappendices providing the historical sources for our knowledge of Bertran's life, a list of rhymes, an index of first lines and concordance to the principal 16Reviews earlier editions, the extantmusical scores; by a complete glossary, aselectedbibliography, and indexofpropernamesand matters of particular interest in the texts, commentary, and introduction. Each of these is a first-rate scholarly instrument. It..." @default.
