- W2002115922 abstract "Holocene and Pleistocene corals from the Bahamas and the Florida Keys were analysed by neutron-activation analysis followed by Ge(Li) spectrometry. Analytical data were treated by multivariate statistical analyses to obtain residue-free concentration values for the seven rare-earth elements (REE) La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb and Lu, coprecipitated with coral aragonite, marine magnesian calcite and freshwater calcite. Effective REE distribution coefficients (Di, eff) were found to be approximately 100 for aragonite and 250 for magnesian calcite. The difference in distribution coefficients is probably due to non-equilibrium uptake of REE's into magnesian calcite and is not caused by a fractionation between aragonite and calcite. During diagenesis the carbonates incorporate considerable amounts of REE's with a preference for the lighter elements." @default.
