- W2002116141 abstract "Simultaneous recordings of the following were made during the speech of five subjects: acoustic signal, lung volume, electromyographic activities of the diaphragm and rectus abdominis, pleural and abdominal pressures, and anteroposterior displacements of the thorax and abdomen. Records were obtained at various lung volumes and loudness levels during sustained [a] productions and during a variety of speech utterances. Results indicate that the diaphragm often plays an active rôle in the regulation of the respiratory driving force at high lung volumes during productions of normal or less than normal loudness. For some productions, its active rôle terminates at lung volumes where the net muscular effort of the entire respiratory mechanism remains opposite in sign to airflow. This suggests a dissociation of the diaphragm from other inspiratory muscles for certain speaking conditions despite the need for a braking action against elastic forces. Occasionally, active diaphragmatic behavior was observed at lung volumes below the functional residual capacity. Possible explanations for such activity will be offered." @default.
