BONDED (CONCRETE) FROST PENETRATION WAS MEASURED BY RESISTANCE BLOCKS AND A FROST PENETROMETER. THE VEGETATION WAS MEDIUM- DENSITY GRASS AND WEEDS ON THE PLAINFIELD SITE AND MEDIUM- DENSITY ALFALFA ON THE FAYETTE SITE. FROST DEPTH WAS MEASURED AT 4-DAY INTERVALS DURING THE WINTER OF 1967-68 EXCEPT AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE FROST SEASON, WHEN MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN MORE FREQUENTLY. ALTHOUGH THE TWO SOILS BEGAN TO FREEZE AT THE SAME TIME, FROST PENETRATED FASTER AND DEEPER AND THAWED SOONER IN THE SANDY SOIL. SOIL FREEZING AND THAWING ARE GRADUAL PROCESSES, AND HOW THEY EFFECT PERMEABILITY AT A GIVEN POINT IN THE CYCLE DEPENDS ON THE RELATIVE AMOUNT OF PORE SPACE THAT IS OCCUPIED BY ICE CRYSTALS. THE RISE IN RESISTANCE WITH FREEZING REFLECTS THE CHANGE FROM WATER TO ICE. THE RESISTANCE READINGS AT THE 60-CM. DEPTH DURING THE SECOND FREEZE-THAW CYCLE ILLUSTRATE THESE CHANGES. SOIL WATER CONTENT, WHICH WAS MEASURED BY BOTH NEUTRON METER DEPTH PROBE AND GRAVIMETRIC SAMPLING, REMAINED RELATIVELY STABLE AT THIS DEPTH DURING THE PERIOD SHOWN. WHILE THE SAND THAWED AT A NEARLY CONSTANT RATE THROUGH-THE THAW PERIOD, THE SILT THAWED AT A GREATLY DIMINISHED RATE THE LAST 2 WEEKS. THE REDUCED HARDNESS TENDS TO INCREASE ITS PERMEABILITY. CONVERSELY, THE HARDENING OF FROST DURING FREEZING CAUSED BY THE GRADUAL MOVEMENT OF WATER FROM THE LIQUID TO THE SOLID PHASE WOULD DECREASE PERMEABILITY. THIS SUGGESTS THAT THE PRESENT METHOD OF CLASSIFYING FROZEN SOIL SIMPLY BY TYPE, DEPTH, AND PERSISTENCE IS NOT ADEQUATE FOR HYDROLOGIC PURPOSES." @default.
