- W2002127578 abstract "ABSTRACT For many plant products, the opening of new market niches increases the demand which in turn often increases the difficulty of managing plant populations sustainably. The baobab tree provides food, medicine, fibre, crafts and income to local people in Africa, and its fruit pulp has recently begun to be commercialised in Europe and the USA. Little is known from Malawi, the major exporter of baobab fruit pulp. This paper investigates the status of baobab tree populations in two areas, one under high and the other under moderate market demand for fruits. Density and population structure was similar in both areas. Size class distribution curves were bell-shaped and the proportion of juveniles was low. More than 60% of the sampled baobab trees had been debarked and about 60% showed symptoms of disease. The baobab populations in southern Malawi are ageing populations, with low recruitment, and a considerable percentage of diseased mature trees. Although further studies are recommended, communities living in southern Malawi and elsewhere should be encouraged to propagate this species." @default.
