- W2002127891 abstract "plasma cholesterol, several other lipid measure ments have been preferred at one time or another for the assessment of that risk. Such determina tions include the percentage of esterified choles terol, the ratio of cholesterol to phospholipids, and the concentration of total lipids, triglycerides, lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, HDL phospholipids, and HDL 2 and HDL3 cholesterol or total mass. Some of these measurements have fallen into disuse, sometimes because of the cumbersome nature of the test and usually without an adequate prospective study to establish the potential useful ness with certainty. Most clinical laboratories now offer total cholesterol, total triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol as routine studies, and some of the other measurements are available under spe cial circumstances. In recent times, the protein components of the lipoproteins have been advocated by many inves tigators as the most appropriate entities for mea surement. Some logic is evident in the argument that the plasma concentration of the proteins that serve as carriers for transporting the lipids from and to the tissues would be more closely related to the accumulation of these lipids than would the concentration of the lipids themselves. This idea is not new. As long as 22 years ago, Alaupovic, Gustafson, Sanbar, and Furman 4 suggested that the functional properties of the ultracentrifugally defined lipoproteins may be determined primarily by the presence of apolipoproteins A, B, and C. Seven years later, Alaupovic 5 clearly elaborated" @default.
